Below are the details of a number of organisations which offer support to victims of abuse and their families.

We have also included details of how to report abuse, should you wish to do so.


Abuse Recovery UK (ARUK)

This website provides interactive support to survivors of sexual abuse. It also has advice on related subjects such as rape, panic attacks, eating disorders and self harm. There is also a partners and parents section.

A national registered charity which aims to support groups who are helping, or wish to help, girls and women who have been subjected to sexual abuse, domestic violence, female circumcision, forced prostitution or other abusive practices.

BASPCAN is a registered charity which aims to prevent physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and neglect of children.

It also aims to promote their well-being and their rights as citizens.

It does this through education, campaigning and other activities.

Independent Care After Incest and Rape (ICAIR)

This is a registered charity with a national network of telephone helplines.

It prefers callers to write for information. An A4 sae is required and information will be dispatched normally within 3 days.

Masa (Men Against Sexual Abuse)

Due to lack of funding Masa can only help callers in Scotland. Masa offers help to men who were abused as children or adults or who are victims of male rape.

It offers counselling, psychotherapy and hypnotherapy.

The NSPCC aims to prevent child abuse and neglect in all forms.

Open 24 hours a day, this is a registered charity giving national cover including the Republic of Ireland.

The Samaritans aim to provide confidential emotional support for people in crisis.

Survivors on the Net

This website provides online support and information for survivors of childhood abuse, their partners, family and friends.

It provides:

  • database of self-help groups, counsellors and therapists

  • a 24-hour information and self-help forum run by other survivors

  • an email enquiry and support service

    Survivors UK offers counselling for men who have experienced sexual abuse / rape.

    Send a SAE for an information pack. The charity will also respond to specific written enquiries.


    Reporting Abuse

    If you would like to report abuse you can contact your local police station who have specially trained Child Protection Team Officers.

    The child protection teams may be called Female and Child Protection Units.

    Police Child Protection Teams

    The teams investigate allegations or suspicions of child abuse. They work with social workers from Social Services Departments, or representatives of other caring agencies.

    All police officers and social workers receive joint training in this complex and highly sensitive work.

    Crimestoppers is a registered charity giving national cover. It provides a free phone service to any person with information about crime.

    It also provides a means through which people can provide anonymous information regarding crime.
