Kenyon exposes what really goes on underground |
Kenyon Confronts: The Gravy Train was broadcast on Wednesday, 22 January, 2003 at 19:30 GMT on BBC One Kenyon Confronts exposes an underworld of malpractice, rule-breaking and institutionalised work-avoidance on Britain's busiest transport system. And it is costing us millions.
The team goes undercover in London's Underground - a transport system all taxpayers fund, whether they live in London, Londonderry, Stirling or Swansea.
And when you travel underground, a third of the cost of your tube ticket goes on maintenance.
The programme features the first ever secret filming of maintenance gangs working overnight on the underground.
The footage shows how one gang takes nearly 900 man hours to carry out a job that should have required a single nightshift.
The programme also reveals secret documents which show how the travelling public was potentially exposed to danger when a gang tried to fit straight rails around a bend, to save time and money.
Reporter Paul Kenyon investigates who is responsible for the millions of pounds wasted and confronts the men who are quite happy to be paid for doing as little work as possible.
