The celebrated writer and political commentator Gore Vidal has died aged 86. For six decades he charted the course of the United States in novels, essays and biting commentary.

In the run up to the US presidential vote of November 2008 he spoke to Stephen Sackur and gave his perspective on America's place in the world.
