In a HARDtalk interview broadcast on 29th September 2009, Sarah Montague asked him whether he thinks the Nato-led coalition in Afghanistan can defeat the Taliban.
He said he agreed with the latest report from the commanding US officer in Afghanistan, Stanley McChrystal, that without more troops and a change of strategy, the mission there will fail.
