| | Friday, 20 June, 2003, 11:15 GMT 12:15 UK Hardtalk in the Gulf: Massoumah Al-Mubarak  The Emir of Kuwait approves of voting rights for his female subjects In a HARDtalk interview on 19 June, Tim Sebastian travels to Kuwait to talk to Massoumah Al-Mubarak about her struggle to extend voting rights to women Massoumah Al-Mubarak Kuwaiti women's rights activist with Tim Sebastian In 1999, Kuwait's Emir decreed that women would be able to vote in this year's parliamentary elections. When the decree went before parliament for approval, the Islamist bloc managed to get it thrown out. So when Kuwaitis go to the polls in July, women will still have no say in who runs their country. Massoumah Al-Mubarak is a professor of political science and a leading figure in the women's rights movement. She tells Tim Sebastian about the continued struggle for the vote.
