Race relations after the rioting
Reports by the Campaign for Racial Equality had predicted trouble
In a HARDtalk interview on July 23, Allan Little interviews Lord Herman Ouseley, the former chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality.

Last summer Britain was rocked by an explosion of inter-racial fury, as the worst rioting in decades erupted in the cities of northern England.

Why, half a century after the first wave of Commonwealth immigration, are the race communities in Britain still living such separate - and antagonistic - lives?

Progress

Lord Herman Ouseley
He talks to Allan Little about why the CRE predicted the troubles in Oldham, about why black children are underachieving in schools and about the political ties that the organisation has.

Lord Ouseley also answers the question as to whether things have improved over the last 40 years,

"There is considerable measurable progress," he says, "there is an Asian captaining the England cricket team, there is a black man in the cabinet. Across all walks of life we're seeking to have a diverse society in which we all play our part."

The interview was shown in full on Tuesday 23 July on BBC World and BBC News

HARDtalk with Tim Sebastian is broadcast Mon - Friday on BBC World and BBC News 24
