On Radio 4 and online

Forty years ago Julian Pettifer reported on the war in Vietnam, which eventually cost over three million Vietnamese lives and 58,000 American ones.

Now, four decades later, the trauma of that war and the humiliation of defeat for the Americans is at last fading.

In fact, there has been a transformation in US-Vietnamese relations. Julian Pettifer returned to Vietnam to examine the nature of that change.

How genuine is the new friendship?

In his journey back to Vietnam he spoke to former combatants on both sides and to Vietnamese returning from exile, to gauge their feelings about the changes.

Presenter: Julian Pettifer
