The programme travelled from the beaches of Sardinia to the Baltics

A BBC Radio 4 Crossing Continents programme has been named Travel Story of the Year at a prestigious awards ceremony in London.

The Foreign Press Association is one of the oldest press clubs in the world and represents 700 members from the foreign media and allied organisations from over 70 countries.

Presenter Jonathan Charles and Producer John Murphy were praised by the judges for their "even-handed" account of the dangers Europe faces from a tourist boom.

Runner-up in the category was a Francis Spufford report from Peru published in Cond� Nast Traveller magazine.

Two other Radio 4 programmes triumphed at the awards.

Laurence Grissell and Mike Thomson's programme Document: A Very British Coup was named Radio Programme of the Year.

And the runner-up in the same category was Paul Henley and Leonida Krushelnycky's programme, What's Wrong With Gay Maths?

Another BBC success was an independent production for This World which was named Television Story of the Year.

Inside Israel's Jails was described as "outstanding investigative journalism" by the judges.

The This World and Raw TV team were also presented the Journalist of the Year award.

BBC Radio 4's Crossing Continents is currently off air, but will return on 2 February, 2005.
