The West Bank is under Israeli rule since june 1967 Arab aggression. The fence was built only in June 2002. Why? How can a wall erected by a nation to protect it from another nation be racist or apartheid-inducing? While it does not follow the cease-fire lines all the time it does not deviate to a great extent or create tiny walled prisons across the West Bank. If the fence did in fact strictly follow the 1967 border would peoples' outrage really be any less? It would not seem that way since claims of a fence creating apartheid would still have little factual basis. Having seen the evidence of this and many other programmes one must believe that the majority of the people of Israel and the majority of the Palestinians would rather live in peace, in relatively normal circumstances. Irreperable damage has clearly been done on both sides. Behind the Fence, reveals a highly biased, pro-Palestinian perspective on the "wall of apartheid". How would you like to have someone come into your community to blow themselves up? Would your parents cheer, send you out and then collect money when you become a martyr? Would they be proud that you killed innocent civilians, minding their own business in their houses? How about blowing up school buses? Having almost been killed in last November's bus bombing in Jerusalem, I can understand why the Israelis are building this wall. Yet all this talk of the wall is missing the point. Shouldn't we be looking at the root cause? This act of terrorism is not out of sheer desperation from a people under so called "occupation", as portrayed by the Media. This act of terrorism is taught in their schools, their religious meetings, in their Koran and religious writings, by their parents, and at summer camps. What I find so totally depressing is that the state terrorism of Israel, a nation founded in terrorism and sustained by terrorism - and I don't think there is an alternative description of these appalling acts - is endorsed by America in that they continue to pour funds and weapons into Israel. Equally depressing is that no nation seems prepared to condemn Israel, but more importantly who is prepared to support Palestine with sanctions against Israel and to rescue the Palestinians?
Hasan Kalaji, United Kingdom The programme did not fully explain the reasons behind the need to erect a fence. Unfortunately, it is there for the protection of Israelis and not, as implied, to 'steal' Arab land.
Anita, Meg and Brian Wilkins, England We need more programmes like this, showing the real cruelty and warmongering of the Israeli government and the suffering to both communities. The fence is an abomination and the deep resentment it creates will last for generations. How dare Sharon talk peace when he is doing this? What is even more extraordinary is that the rest of the world lets him do it. The fence was being blamed because an Israeli woman who married a foreigner found that instead of illegally crossing the 1949 ceasefire lines, she has to use the border checkpoint. What is the problem? So the new fence doesn't follow the ceasefire lines, this is inline with UN resolution 242, which says that the new border should be based on security considerations. If you want Israel to withdraw from the west bank it needs a border fence and security.
Mr S Hasaragi, England Whilst some points that you have made did have some truth in them, the program was completely one sided. Even though you claim that the program represents Israelis, it represents a great minority. I am not going to discuss political issues with you at this time, but all I would say is that your programme was offensive, prejudiced, and anti-Semitic - to a level, anti Israeli and completely one sided. I am guessing that since not enough substantial information has been gathered in the research for the making of the programme, you probably have nothing to say. But go on, prove me wrong, show me that the Israeli people are animals and that the programme is justified. The treatment of the Palestinians is shameful - it is hardly surprising that the Arab world feels the West is anti Muslim Israel can only survive with the financial backing of the USA and until the Americans use this financial power to get the Israelis to conform to United Nation Resolutions, there will never be peace A very good programme with a clear message.. Why does Israel have the right to do what it likes when others cannot? Is it not logical that the fence was / is going to cause more problems than it fixes. My congratulations to all who try to stay peaceful with each other.
Liz Bodman, UK Your report was totally biased against the Jews. They have suffered unremitting terrorism for years that has killed hundreds and wounded thousands. They build the fence to keep out murderers. Your report did not highlight this. You depict the Jews as the terrorists and the Palestinians as the victims. This is biased reporting and distorts the truth. I never cease to be appalled by the ruthless brutality of Israel and its illegal settlers. What a disgrace that the British government stands by and does nothing. The BBC is pro-Palestinian, whatever it decides to talk about and excuses the murder of people by Palestinians, insinuating that land is a sufficient excuse.
Andy, England About 120 suicide bombers entered the Israeli territory to murder more than 800 men women and children. Don't you think that this by itself is a good reason for the fence? Have you seen a suicide attack result? Can you imagine a screaming child with his guts spilled on the road.
John McManus, Northern Ireland How one can judge this wall as a security fence, given that Israel already has claimed to have its forces and hi-tech monitoring radars all over the Palestinian areas. Are the Israelis getting too carried away with the world's attention on other issues? It is an appalling fact that Israel does not even allow access to essential aid workers into affected/destructed Palestinian areas, let alone journalists. "Wall of apartheid"? When I began my study of the Arab/Israeli conflict, I was amazed that three Arabs were elected to the first Israeli Knesset. Mind you, this was just several months after five Arab countries went to war against her vowing her complete annihilation. I remember pondering this for the longest. Would I - I'm speaking as a non-Jew, now - have been so charitable?
John Klineberg, England Why is the Scotsman calling the Israeli security fence (to protect them against terrorists) a wall of apartheid? Let's empathize with the Israelis this time. They have had daily terrorist bombs killing innocent civilians (yes!! this is the campaign now, not against the military. Many Palestinians are now aware of Hamas' destroying Palestinian life. I think it about time that the world took a stance on this issue. This clearly violates International Law. Now that the so called roadmap is due to be accepted by the Israeli government, my fear is the clear reservations that they want enforced within the roadmap. They either accept peace and live side by side with the State of Palestine or it should be forced upon them. The Palestinians have made all the concessions so far, it's about time Israel does the same. Sounds like another Israel bashing from the "unbiased" BBC. When will your reporters recognise that all little Israel wants is to live in peace without having to compromise its very security and existence which has been under threat for 50 years. If the Arab sovereign states would contribute in some way to peace rather then training terrorists (eg Syria-Hamas & Hezbolah) then there wouldn't be a need for a wall. When was the last time you heard a Syrian or Iranian leader offer to sponsor a peace process? It's about time the BBC got rid of its pet hates and concentrated on issues reporting honestly and balanced.
Patty Belkin, USA Why do you describe what is obviously a wall - 30ft high, concrete, hundred's of miles long - as a fence? Does a unique, inverted from of English apply to your coverage of the Middle East? Assassination = targeted killing - Military assault = Incursion - Held without charge or trial = administrative detention. Is it coincidence that all these perversions of language paint the illegal Israeli occupation in a better light? Wasn't the Berlin wall built to keep people from leaving - not prevent them from entering? I have a fence around my house to keep unwanted people out, why not around my country?
Richard, USA The fence is a wide structure which requires uprooting thousands of trees and its route dips beyond the Green Line in several areas. Beside the fact the fence was not built on the demarcation line, it also separates Palestinian communities, denies access to land to farmers, breaks off water lines, and de facto illegally annexes more land and water resources for Israeli consumption. The fence is a big tribute to the Israeli segregation policy which is based on demographic change anxieties that threaten Israel as a state of a Jewish majority. In addition, the fence gnaws on the most fertile land in the Palestinian territory which is a vital agricultural basket in the Palestinian territories and produces 42% of all fruit and vegetables in the West Bank. Moreover, the area dedicated to this fence represents approximately 10% of the West Bank and also includes the last water reservoir used for irrigation in the West Bank.
