A database of cell phone IDs to tackle mobile theft

US wireless carriers have announced plans to create a database of unique cell phone IDs to help fight mobile phone theft.

They have also pledged to block the reactivation of lost or stolen devices.

In other news, Facebook gets ready to buy Instagram for $1bn (£629m; 762m euros), Apple fights the Flashback Trojan, Sony to cut 10,000 jobs and Panasonic tests a shampooing robot.
