Sir Roderic Lyne, British ambassador to Russia

On the programme this week, Sir David interviewed the British Ambassador to Russia Sir Roderic Lyne and the Russian Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency, Grigory Karasin on the aftermath of the siege of a Moscow theatre by Chechen rebels. As the programme went on air, hundreds of hostages were still being treated for poisoning from the gas used by troops when they stormed the theatre. But Sir Roderic confirmed that the Oxford student who was among those being held hostage had now been discharged from hospital and was with his family. He said the Foreign Office would be reviewing its travel advice for those wishing to visit Russia. Later, Mr Karasin told the programme that it was important for Russia to liaise with the UK and other western countries to fight international terrorism.

Sir David also interviewed the former Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook, who is now Leader of the Commons. Mr Cook said Chechnya was currently "one of the most intractable problems in foreign policy".

Also in the studio was EU Commissioner Christ Patten, a former chairman of the Conservative Party. He warned party leader, Iain Duncan Smith, not to rubbish the last Conservative government of John Major.

The programme also featured an interview with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey, ahead of his retirement. On the subject of whether Prince Charles should re-marry, Dr Carey said the subject had never come up in his discussions with the heir to the throne. But he said it was important to "wait and see" for any developments.

The papers were reviewed by the former newspaper editor Sir Max Hastings and the President of the National Union of Students, Mandy Telford.
