On the programme this week, the Australian Prime Minister John Howard insisted that the terrorist attack on Bali could not have been forseen. Speaking on Australia's day of national mourning for the victims of the bombing, Mr Howard told Sir David Frost: "There was nothing at all specific and the travel advice we had had in place some time mentioned that bombings had occurred and that more may be attempted. "When that general advice was assessed by our intelligence people the decision was taken that no up-grade of that advice was needed."

The Foreign Office minister, Baroness Amos, firmly rejected any suggestion that the British government had failed to pass on important intelligence warnings to the public. Speaking live from Bali, she said: "If you look at the information that we, the Australians and the United States were giving out prior to the terrible, terrible events here last week none of us made a specific reference to Bali because we did not have that information."

But the Shadow Foreign Secretary, Michael Ancram said there were lessons to be learned from the events of the past week: "The Americans were changing their advice on the basis of their information. We apparently did not do so. We need to ask why." Mr Ancram repeated his call for the foreign secretary to appear before MPs tomorrow to explain.
