The guests on Breakfast with Frost this week were Derek Simpson, the new leader of Amicus - Britain's second largest trade union, the former Labour cabinet minister and veteran politician Tony Benn, the Shadow Foreign Secretary Michael Ancram, and Northern Ireland's First Minister David Trimble.

Also in the programme: a discussion about the rollercoaster trading on the world's stock markets, with the economist Roger Bootle and the BBC's Business Editor Jeff Randall. And as the Commonwealth Games gets underway this week the programme spoke to two competitors: the middle distance runner Kelly Holmes and the swimmer Steve Parry.

Derek Simpson told Breakfast with Frost that the Labour leadership was "divorced from its roots". He suggested his shock defeat of Sir Ken Jackson, a key ally of Tony Blair, for the leadership of Amicus should act as a warning to the Government.

David Trimble said that Tony Blair must prove he is the guardian of the peace process by bringing pressure to bear on republican paramilitaries to implement a "clear and unambiguous" ceasefire. He said it was Mr Blair's responsibility to prevent republican violence continuing in Belfast.

Michael Ancram had just returned from a visit to Zimbabwe and he warned of impending famine because of President Mugabe's laws to evict white farmers. He said that the Foreign Secretary Jack Straw must argue the case for extending European Union sanctions against Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's regime.
