Among the guests speaking to Sir David Frost were the Northern Ireland Secretary John Reid and the leader of the Conservative Party, Iain Duncan Smith.

In a week in which the government has apologised for an email sent questioning the motives of the Paddington survivors group, the secretary of state said that focusing on individuals was harming politics. He said: "We have made mistakes, but I also think there is a media culture which concentrates on the personalities and on the froth."

But the leader of the Opposition said the government was guilty of trying to crush those who tried to question its performance. "What we are getting from this government is such disdain from ordinary people," he said.

With senate hearings continuing into CIA and FBI failings ahead of the Twin Towers attack last September, Sir David spoke to President Clinton's Director for Intelligence Philip Bobbitt.

In the wake of that glorious England victory over Argentina, Sir David was joined by the Football Association's David Davies live from Awaji Island in Japan. And in the studio, he spoke to the former England manger, Bobby Robson. His advice to Sven-Goran Eriksson was to keep the same team which had triumphed on Friday.

And to reflect on another British sporting achievement - Lennox Lewis' victory over Mike Tyson - Sir David also spoke to boxing promoter Frank Warren and superheavyweight, Audley Harrison.
