The Defence Secretary, Geoff Hoon, said Osama bin Laden possessed materials that could be used in a nuclear weapon.

Speaking from Ankara, the prime minister of Turkey, Bulent Ecevit, explained how his country is contributing to the war against terrorism and helping to plan for an inclusive Afghan government to replace the Taliban.

Two of Britain's most experienced politicians gave their views on the war. Former Liberal Democrat leader Lord Ashdown said the momentum gained by the Northern Alliance must be maintained to bring about a swift conclusion to the conflict. Former deputy prime minister Lord Heseltine said the war needed to be fought quickly to ease the strain on the international coalition.

Lord Wakeham, the chairman of the Press Complaints Authority, condemned a High Court judge's ruling preventing a Sunday newspaper from printing allegations about a Premiership footballer's love-life.

Speaking from the World Trade Organisation conference in Qatar, Trade Secretary Patricia Hewitt explained how the latest round of WTO talks needed to create a fairer deal for developing countries.

Her sentiment was echoed by the president of the World Bank, James Wolfensohn, who argued that a major legacy of September 11th was that the rich West would in future pay more attention to the needs of poorer nations.
