 The winner on Breakfast |
Breakfast can reveal that the winner of the Guide Dog of the Year Award is ..Roz. Viewers helped choose this year's top dog in a competition run by the charity Guide Dogs for the Blind. The search for the nation's Guide Dog of the Year was launched in March. Guide Dogs for the Blind held regional awards in three categories: Life Changing; Heroic and Exceptional Work. The finalist from each of these categories went nose-to-nose in a Breakfast viewer vote to win the title Guide Dog of the Year.
The three guide dog finalists:
- Heroic Guide Dog of the Year - Roz, from Great Barr in Birmingham.
- Life-changing Guide Dog of the Year - Darcy, from Yeovil in Somerset.
- Exceptional Work Guide Dog of the Year - Barley, from Surbiton in Surrey.
It was Roz's heroic tale that won over the voters. Roz is a three-year-old guide dog who miraculously survived a vicious and savage attack by a Rotweiler whilst out working with her visually-impaired owner Gary Wickett.
Roz's injuries were very severe but she still managed to lead Gary the half a mile home safely. It was thought she would be too traumatised by her experience to go back to being a guide dog.
However, not only has she been able to return to her guide dog duties, but she also walks along the road where the attack happened every day - helping Gary get on the bus to go to work in Birmingham City Centre.
