Kiran: never expected to win |
She's the youngest women ever to win the coveted Man Booker prize - but at 35, Kiran Desai is no innocent abroad in the world of publishing. Her mother is the respected novelist Anita Desai, who has herself been nominated three times for the Booker Prize.
Kiran's winning novel, the Inheritance of Loss, was the unanimous choice of the judges at last night's award ceremony.
It beat strong competition, including the bookies' favourite, Sarah Waters' The Night Watch
This morning, we talked live to Kiran Desai.
She told us that her mother - who helped keep her spirits up during the eight years it took her to write the novel - still doesn't know she's won the Booker.
