He's a familiar face to many as a comic actor, but to mark the 50th anniversary of the National Youth Theatre Richard Wilson is taking on a new role. He's currently one of six guest directors working for the NYT.
Set in the late 1960s, Wilson's play - The Astronaut Wives Club, centres on the wives of astronauts coming to terms with their fears and frustrations.
Richard Wilson is live on Breakfast this morning talking about a new play he's directing for the National Youth Theatre - watch at 8.50am The NYT is staging six plays set in the different decades since the theatre started in 1956.
They are known collectively as 'Sextet', and publicity for the season says each of the plays will be "celebrating lost tribes and iconic moments".
Speaking on Breakfast, Richard Wilson was remarkably upbeat about young actors getting into a profession with notoriously high unemployment.
He said he would never discourage anyone from trying their hand at acting: "If the bug is there you've got to try it".
Wilson added that he was working with six young women actors, who were enthusiastic, he said it was good to work with youngsters who didn't have the baggage more established actors sometimes had.
