Police dogs: May update
Leo with handler PC John Weatherhead
New kid on the block: Leo is joining the Breakfast puppies
If you're a regular Breakfast viewer, you'll probably already know that we're following the progress of six trainee police dogs.

The Breakfast puppies were all part of the same litter of German Shepherds, born at a Police training centre at Keston on the outskirts of London.

Well, now there's a new kid on the block.

He's called Leo; he's a nine month old German Shepherd - and he'll be joining the Breakfast puppies on their training.

Not all police dogs are born into the job. Up to one in three is - like Leo - a gift. They're often handed in to the police by families who can no longer look after them.

Training has to start from scratch for them. But. Leo's new handler, PC John Weatherhead, says he's already showing promise.

He's settled well into the family and proved that he can get along with John's two children. And, because John's an experienced dog handler, he's already started training Leo with a ball and rope.

Breakfast puppies: May update

Kevin and Bb
Sgt Kevin Stone tells us: "Bb' is doing well.

"She's growing up and has taken to flirting and trying to run off with the boys.

"She's maturing and getting cheeky. If there are no treats in her food bowl it's tipped up to see if they're underneath!"

Ashley and Ian

Ian and Ashley
Ashley is demolishing the garden, says Ian
"Ashley is developing well, but she still has a fetish for other animals," Sgt Ian Fletcher tells us.

"She is now systematically dismantling her compound having previously rearranged my ornamental garden into what now resembles a war zone.

"She has just finished her first season, which passed without any real problems"

Nelson and Andy

PC Andy Miller already has a working dog - but he's noticed that Nelson is trying to take over as top dog in the family.

He is also taking his biting practice very seriously. Unfortunately Andy has had to replace parts of Nelson's compound because he has bitten through it.

Roman and Andy

Roman's barking is coming on nicely, according to PC Andy Spearing.

Of the litter, Roman has always attempted to be top dog. Andy says on a visit to the vet, Roman even tried to assert his authority over a lion. Luckily it was made of stone.

Jaeger and Jack

All of the puppies seem to have suddenly developed a love of water - and Jaeger is no exception.

According to Sgt Jack Webb, the muddier it is the more Jaeger loves it.

Chaz and Dave

Chaz' weight has stabilised to a healthy 34kg, according to PC Dave Adams. He is also trying to help out at home though not with much success.

Dave has been cleaning out the garage but keeps finding Chaz re-scattering his carefully arranged piles of rubbish.
