Rape
still from Breakfast's interview with Alex, who was raped at a friend's wedding
Alex was raped at a friend's wedding. Police took no action
Twenty years ago, one in every four rape cases ended with a conviction. Now the conviction rate stands at only one in twenty.

At a time when there's a huge emphasis on cutting crime, why is rape slipping through the net?

This morning on Breakfast:

  • The victim's story

We hear from Alex, who was raped at a friend's wedding.

    What you told Breakfast
I totally agree with Alex: no one ever asks the man why did he think he was entitled to rape or force unwanted sexual activity on a woman...Too many men are committing rape and getting away with it.
    Jennifer Drew, London

She didn't know who her attacker was and even though she went to the police straight away, she's not happy with the way they treated her. The case never went to court, because of lack of evidence.

  • The debate

So why have conviction rates slumped so dramatically? We debated the issues, with Jo Lovett, Dr Bernadette Butler and the home office minister Fiona McTaggart.
