Find out who's under investigation: watch Graham Satchell's report |
Regular viewers of Breakfast will know we've been investigating the problem of silent calls for some months now on the programme.
Today Breakfast's Graham Satchell reports on a new investigation by the industry regulator Ofcom.
Ofcom has received complaints about seven companies and it will now investigate them to see if they have been making silent calls.
Silent calls are computer generated by telemarketing companies. Your phone rings, you rush to answer it and there is silence at the other end.
We'll have more from Graham throughout Friday's programme
For people receiving these regularly it can be an irritating and frightening experience.
Earlier in the week, we reported the news that you will at least now be able to find out the number of direct marketing companies by dialling 1471 on your phone
Back in May we brought you another development in this story when communications watchdog Ofcom ruled that silent calls have caused consumers "annoyance and anxiety" and had started giving final warnings to the companies.
We first brought you this story in November 2004, and we had some information about what you can do to stop nuisance calls
In the meantime, Graham's advice to people who are being troubled by silent calls is to complain, and register with the Telephone Preference Service which should help to reduce the problem:
