Mary Poppins on stage
cast of the stage version of Mary Poppins
The show's budget is 8m
To make Mary Poppins controversial is quite an acheivement.

The film version of PL Travers' novel is saccharine sweet, with Julie Andrews in the title role - and Dick Van Dyke as the world's weirdest chimney sweep.

But the new stage version of Mary Poppins is billed as darker than the film - and unsuitable for children under seven.

The production, which has several new songs, has a running time of just under three hours and a budget of 8m.

  • Mary Poppins opens tomorrow night at the Prince Edward Theatre, London.
