Return to Grenada
Julia Botfield in Grenada
Jules with Velma Greenidge who lost her house and belongings
It's hard to imagine the full extent of the damage that has been caused by the recent hurricane which swept through the Caribbean earlier this month.

Those living on the islands have been left to count the cost and start the lengthy process of re-building their properties - and their lives.

The emotional impact has also been widely felt, not least of all by people from the islands who've settled in the UK but who still have family, friends and homes in the Caribbean.

On Monday's Breakfast:

Return to Grenada
Velma's husband describes how he escaped Ivan

Velma Greenidge was stranded in London as her family, her home, her country were hit by the full force of hurricane Ivan.

She was finally able to fly home a few days ago to see the devastation at first hand and Breakfast's Julia Botfield was at Point Salines airport to meet her.

Velma was reunited with her family, but with no job and no money, the reality of seeing her house and belongings totally destroyed proved too much for Velma.

Meanwhile Velma's husband who was in Grenada during the hurricane described how he had to run for shelter carrying two of his children on his back as he was lashed by the winds.

On Tuesday's Breakfast:

Grenada was not ready for Hurricane Ivan.
In today's film Julia Botfield looked at the extent of the damage across the whole of Grenada. The island has already started the process of re-building with government and opposition parties working together.

We also talked to the High Commissioner for Grenada, His Excellency Joslyn Whiteman, and the actor and to the playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah, whose family are from the island.

There's also an appeal fund for islanders:

On Wednesday's Breakfast:

Hurricane Ivan has wreaked havoc in Grenada
Grenada says tourists can help in aftermath.

Tourism accounts for about 25 percent of Grenada's income - so it's little surprise that Hurricane Ivan had a devastating impact not only on the island's infrastructure but also on its economy.

Breakfast's Julia Botfield has witnessed the devastation it caused, and in the final part of our special series, she looked at how the community is starting to rebuild.
