Shipman found dead
Breakfast reported on the apparent suicide of the multiple murderer Harold Shipman, who was found dead in his prison cell this morning.

News of the discovery came just before 9am - and in an extended programme, we got the first reactions from some of those caught up in the case.

  • We spoke to one woman - Jane Ashton Hibbert - whose grandmother was one of Shipman's victims

"I am angry that he has taken the easy way out," she told Breakfast.

"He has never shown any compassion or remorse for any of his victims."

Jane's grandmother was one of the patients killed by Shipman, when he worked as a GP in Hyde in Greater Manchester.

At the time, Shipman told the family that she'd died peacefully of a stroke. In fact, he'd given her an overdose of heroin.

"He even said I am sorry about your grandmother when I went to see him at the surgery a few weeks later," she told us. "I do not mourn his passing at all."

  • Lawyer Ann Alexander represents around 200 families of Shipman's victims.

She told us that many people had hoped that he'd eventually explain what drove him to kill.

"My clients this morning have been very shocked - there are more questions than answers.

"A number of our clients hoped that at some stage he would talk about what he did and why he did it. Now, they're cheated out of that"
