Our main story this morning was the news that some rail passengers face a sharp rise in fares.

The BBC has learned that rail commuters in the south of England face an inflation-busting, four percent rise in the cost of season tickets.

The Strategic Rail Authority will confirm today that a cap which limits rises in commuter fares to less than inflation is to be scrapped.

The new pricing system will be introduced to the north of England over the next couple of years.

The main changes to ticket prices will see an annual season ticket from Southampton to London will cost well over three thousand pounds.

At the moment, season tickets are regulated. Any price rises are capped, at, on average, one percent below inflation.

That would mean a season ticket it would have gone up 2% or �66.64

But changes expected today mean that the cap will go up to one percent above inflation.

That would amount to an increase of four percent or �133.28

So the total cost of a new season ticket would be more than �3400
