Igby Slocumb (played by Kieran Culkin) is at war with the oppressive world of his East Coast "old money" family.

His dad is schizophrenic and his mother is self absorbed, distant and pops a lot of pills, Igby can't cope any more and he escpaes to New York for a new start.

Issues about his family, and what it's like to be young and have huge things inside dominate the film.

Goldblum plays D.H. Banes Igby's Godfather and quasi-benefactor whose motives are somewhat questionable.

Igby's relationship with his brother in the film, mirrors the real life relationship between Kieran and his brother Macaulay.

Kieran has been acting since the age of six and despite playing alongside his brother in Home Alone, never quite had the success of Macaulay, at least not until now.

Goldblum's character is another trying to bring Igby down, he says he feels strongly about the film's themes.

He says he's cautious about the emptiness of materialism and the destructive power of people who pretend to have selfless motives.

Goldblum was also drawn to the project for personal reasons. "I teach acting at the Playhouse West in North Hollywood,"

He says. "Burr Steers (the film's director) was in one of my first classes several years ago.

"I hadn't been in touch with him, but was delighted when he called and asked me to read the script. I was so proud, touched and thrilled to work with him."
