The American military has launched an investigation into the killing of at least seven Iraqi women and children.

Najaf is south of Baghdad

The Iraqis were shot dead at a checkpoint close to the city of Najaf, in central Iraq.

Coalition forces say the vehicle failed to stop, despite warnings from the American soldiers manning the checkpoint.

A suicide bomber killed four American soldiers near Najaf at the weekend - American troops have been working hard to secure the area and stop attacks on their supply lines.

President Bush has sent a message to the Iraqi people, vowing to see the war through - until Iraq is liberated.

In his address, the president said that the Americans would bring food, medicine, and "a better life".

The president said the coalition forces would not stop until the Iraqi people were free.

On Breakfast we also spoke to BBC correspondent David Willis who is travelling with American troops, near Baghdad.

Some US troops are currently engaged in battle with the Republican Guard.

The next phase

But the troops that David is with are currently "consolidating", close to Baghdad, before the final assault on the city.

David said that the troops are getting ready for the "next phase" of the attack and he estimated that American troops would be in the city by the weekend.
