| War puts prime minister under pressure ![]() Blair's war stance is unpopular with the left When he commited troops to Iraq, Tony Blair took the gamble of his career. Now that war has started, the polls indicate a majority of Britons are behind the campaign. The panel argued that the prime minister has "counfounded his critics" by ignoring focus groups and doing what he thinks is right. Michael Jacobs of the Fabian Society said that most Labour MPs backed Blair but warned that now that MPs has a taste for defying their leader, they would do so more readily in another situation : Neil Kinnock was very supportive of the Prime Minister's position in Europe. He acknowledged that there was tension within the European Union - but said that the European Union would come together in focussing on the re-building of Iraq.
