| Iraq: opening a second front ![]() The US may enlist the help of Kurdish fighters One week into the war against Iraq, Breakfast took stock this morning of the developments in the struggle against Saddam To make sense of the latest military developments, we turned to Air Vice Marshal Sir Tim Garden helped us analyse the latest military developments, using our special virtual reality map table. "In a week there has been an enormous surge forward - but it hasn't been as easy as everyone was predicting " Sir Tim told us. Predictions that US and British troops could by-pass Iraqi towns and march on towards Baghdad have failed to materialise. "There have been lots of small engagements," Sir Tim said "Unless you are certain you have dealt with the Iraqis, you really cannot afford to leave just logistics troops behind." We talked to Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith about what he hopes will emerge from the Prime Minister's two-day summit with President Bush.
The key question: should the UN be involved in reconstruction - or will Iraq remain under US control when the war is over? "We think that if we could get a UN resoution on reconstruction that would be a good thing. But the British and the Americans are concerned about the role the French would play, " Iain Duncan Smith told Breakfast. "The key thing to keep in sight is that reconstruction takes place immediately because it's vital that Iraq moves back to stability," he added. |
