| Closing in on Baghdad ![]() Coalition ground troops are close to Baghdad Coalition forces have attacked Iraqi troops, just south of Baghdad. US Marines are close to the capital where a fierce battle has developed. Elite Iraqi soldiers have again show fierce resistance. We also looked at the growing humanitarian crisis in the city of Basra - which has also now become a military objective for the allied forces. David reported that though progress is being made, it is slow.
The marines are again encountering fierce resistance from Iraqi troops - some of whom are dressed as civilians. Allied commanders, he said, were surprised by the tenacity of the resistance they have so far encountered. Jane explained that in Basra - Iraq's second city - there has been no clean water for more than half of the population for four days. Electricity supplies have also been cut. The UN has warned that tens of thousands of people there face the threat of a humanitarian disaster. But British troops are still trying to secure the city and facing fierce resistance from well trained security troops in the city. British commanders are hoping that people in the city will rise up against Saddam Hussein - but at the moment that is not happening. Andrew reported that bombing last night in the city was the heaviest since Friday - but that apart from government buildings the city still remains intact.
