The Ministry of Defence says its trying to find and recover the missing soldiers. And seven US Marines were killed in the town of Nasiriya. Unexpected pockets of resistance have appeared in the south of the country - which is where the British soldiers are missing. Meanwhile America and Britain have accused Iraq of a "flagrant violation of the Geneva Convention" after five captured American soldiers were shown being interviewed on Iraqi TV. Overnight, central Baghdad was hit by several large explosions during further heavy air raids. BBC correspondent Hilary Andersson spoke to Breakfast live from Kuwait She explained that in southern Iraq a type of guerrilla war now seems to be developing.
Highly trained Iraqi troops appear to be hiding in urban areas in southern Iraq. It had been expected that there would be less resistance in the south of the country - so these pockets of resistance have come as a surprise to allied commanders. In Jordan, refugees from the conflict have been crossing the border - though not in huge numbers. Breakfast's Luisa Baldini reported live from Jordan Luisa spoke to families who have fled Baghdad - though only the well off can afford the journey, which takes ten hours by car.
The refugees she spoke to said that the road from Baghdad to Jordan had been bombed and that it was difficult to get through. But those that had made the journey said they were relieved to have reached the safety of Jordan. |
