Are our troops battle-ready?
One mother prepares a food parcel for her son
Some army mothers are sending food parcels
The crisis over Iraq will come to a head within the next few days, according to President Bush.

Kit requested still not received... Scrounging everything from the Americans... As it stands people here will die

Royal Marine Commando's e-mail

But, while the British government says it stands four-square behind the US, there's growing concern about whether our troops are actually ready for battle.

British soldiers' families are worried about the rations being fed to our troops in the Gulf. Letters and e-mails home from soldiers contain complaints that they're living off subsistence rations, losing weight and struggling to keep up morale.

  • We had a huge response to this item. Hundreds of you e-mailed to express your concern - although a few of you said army life had always been like this.

  • Breakfast's Graham Satchell has been talking to the families of British troops serving in the Gulf.

Letters and e-mails home, he discovered, paint a disturbing picture of disorganisation.

One commando in the Royal Marines e-mailed his mother to say:

Food situation still bad. A small ration pack for lunch now but meals still small and inadequate.

Kit requested still not received, everything from desert boots and the right sort of camouflaging to vehicles and weapons; scrounging everything from the Americans.

As it stands people here will die.

  • Some of the relatives' concerns have been raised in the House of Commons by Liberal Democrat MP Norman Lamb

  • We put his points - and many of your e-mails - to the Defence Minister Dr Lewis Moonie.

"I do not believe for a moment that people in the Gulf have been let down," he told us.
    Defence Minister Dr Lewis Moonie
Britain and the US share supply lines, says the minister

"Britain and the United States share a logistical chain of command: our troops eat the same things.

"They have a cooked meal in the morning and evening and during the day they have a ration pack to take into the desert.

"They eat around 4,000 calories a day"

He added: "No-one has to buy kit because there are shortages, but people have always tried to personalise their equipment"
