Electronic tagging for the elderly
Caring for a relative who has dementia can be extremely stressful.

One controversial solution that's being proposed is electronic tagging, so that an electronic alarm warns their carers, if they wander too far away.

On Breakfast this morning, we debated the rights and wrongs of tagging an adult who's committed no crime.

We talked to the man behind the plan, Dr Frank Miskelly from Charing Cross Hospital, and Clive Evers from the Alzheimers Society. A recording of this will be available shortly.

"There is a stigma attached to the term electronic tagging," acknowledged Dr Miskelly, "but there are enormous potential benefits."

The Charing Cross tagging system looks like a digital watch. It activates an alarm if the patient wanders into unsafe areas like kitchens or lifts.

For the Alzheimers Society, Clive Evers acknowledges that the technology has potential, but he's concerned that it can be used to cover up staff shortages in care homes.

He added: "Three quarters of people in residential homes have dementia and cannot give adequate consent to use this technology. It's important to determine consent before they go into care."

We've had lots of e-mails on this - and we'd still like to hear your views. Are you caring for a relative with Alzheimers? Would you give your consent to be tagged if you suffered from dementia?
