The Guru: Bollywood goes West
Jimi Mistry in The Guru
Watch out for the film's Bollywood dance pastiches
It's been described as Bollywood meets romantic comedy.

Jimi Mistry's new film comes from the makers of Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a funeral - and it's set in India and New York.

Jimi and his co-star Heather Graham told us all about it on Breakfast on BBC One and BBC News 24 this morning.

Graham: plays a porn star who provides all the best lines

Jimi Mistri's past roles include the surprise British hit "East Is East". He's also remembered for his role as Eddie in "Born Romantic" and of course as the dishy Dr. Fonseca in Eastenders (1999 - 2000).

Heather Graham is probably best known as Felicity Shagwell from the second Austin Powers movie.

In The Guru, Jimi Mistry plays the lead role of Ramu Gupta, and Indian dance teacher who arrives in New York with dreams of making it big.

His idol is John Travolta - but the only celluloid role he can land is in a porn movie.

While he's filming, he meets Heather Graham's character - and it's her thoughts that he recycles as apparently inspirational Eastern philosophy.

Mistry: film mocks our faddiness

"It's a cross-over film from India to Hollywood," Jimi told us this morning.

The basic premise - and the central joke of the film - is that anything is possible in America. Even the elevation of an Indian dance teacher to the status of Eastern Guru.

"It's a culture which is quite faddy, " Jimi said. "You can be into one thing one week and another the next - and my character Ramu uses that for all it's worth."
