| Jamaica: Life begins at 40 ![]() A weekend of programmes on BBC radio and television Jamaica's history, character and culture provides the backdrop to a weekend of programmes on BBC television and radio to mark the anniversary of the country's independence. The talents of reggae star Jimmy Cliff will be on display in the film 'The Harder They Come' - he wrote the music and starred in the film - also on Saturday. Jimmy is one of the most important, well-respected and successful figures in the music industry.
A singer, songwriter and performer, Jimmy is credited with having made reggae music a world-wide phenomenon and export. Jimmy Cliff played Ivan Martin in the 1973 film 'The Harder They Come'. His character is a struggling musician who becomes an underground fugitive and renegade political hero. The film features songs written and performed by Cliff: 'Rivers of Babylon', 'Many Rivers to Cross', and the title track 'The Harder They Come'. The lines from the title song went on to become a rallying cry for the people of Jamaica: "I'd rather be a free man in my grave than living like a puppet of a slave". Jimmy is also here to talk about his new album, "Fantastic Plastic People", the title track of which is released on 23rd September. The album comes out on 30th September and is produced by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame. The latest album promises to confirm Jimmy's status as a hero to millions world-wide, meanwhile fans should keep an eye out for the sequel to the 'The Harder They Come', which is currently in development. |
