| Fighting crime with fashion ![]() Desirable, fashionable and tackling social issues The Prime Minister made a promise in April to get street crime under control, saying he would take personal responsibility for the initiative.
Mr Blair said he wants to see a drastic reduction in muggings and robberies by September, but now a group of designers have come together to launch a range of bags and accessories that could help in the offensive on street crime. The Karrysafe range of record bags, mobile phone holders, and what the designers call 'stealth belts' will be unveiled today and are intended to conceal valuables, and protect the individual if attacked. The range of accessories are described as fashionable and desirable, and have been developed with backing from the Design Council. One of items is a slash-proof wrist holder for a mobile phone; but all of the range include combination locks, personal alarms and straps that can't be cut with a knife.
They're all meant to protect owners from 'dipping', 'grabbing', 'lifting' and 'slashing' - the four main techniques used by muggers. The designers worked with the police and personal safety consultants including the Suzy Lamplugh Trust to produce a range of accessories to reduce the risk of attack. Designer Adam Thorpe says: " We have a track record of producing designs which tackle social issues head on and there's little doubt that street crime as an issue is in the forefront of many people's minds at the moment. "The Karrysafe range is our response to this as designers. By reducing the risk that users will be targeted by criminals our new products should make them feel more secure when they're out and about." The makers hope that the new range of accessories will prevent users becoming victims of street crime, most of which is opportunistic. |
