George Best: Me and my liver
Fiona Bruce and George Best
George Best discusses his drinking with Fiona Bruce
In his first television interview since his life-saving liver transplant, George Best speaks frankly about the operation that saved his life, his near brush with death and the demon that nearly killed him - alcohol.

Speaking to BBC Newsreader Fiona Bruce, George and his wife Alex talk about how his drinking had continued even after he was warned: "One more drink and you're dead."

George reveals how he nearly died after the operation, discusses the ethics of giving an alcoholic a liver transplant and explains how he would like to meet the family of the donor who gave him another chance of life.

Worryingly for those who hope he'll stay off the bottle, he says that he wants other people to continue drinking around him.

Alex, who says she would have left George by now if she had not married him so young, still has some doubts about George staying on the wagon.

But George says he hopes to prove his wife and his consultant wrong.

This 4x4 Reports special was on BBC 1 at 1900 BST on Friday 11 October.
