The Fertility Business
In 2000 the Government announced it would end regional variations in the delivery of IVF (in vitro fertilisation) treatment.

An exclusive survey for 4x4 Reports shows that despite this pledge, the Government is still a long way from achieving this target.

Some UK health authorities are funding infertility treatment, but others are refusing resulting in a so called 'postcode lottery.'

Health Secretary Alan Milburn announced in 2000 the Government were committed to ending this regional inequality.

He said, "Infertility causes distress to thousands, but unfortunately NHS fertility services vary massively. Now the NHS has record funding secured it is time to tackle infertility."

Also on the programme Sophie Raworth reports on Britain's severe shortage of human eggs. Sophie joins one couple as, desperate to avoid long waiting lists, they head to the USA for treatment.

Shirley Brailey believes that she has over a 100 brothers and sisters - but she's never met them.

She herself has no idea who her biological father is, only that he was one of Britain's early sperm donors.

Rajesh Mirchandani follows Shirley as she takes a DNA test that will unlock the secrets of her family and help her to find her brothers and sisters.

Also Kate Knapman reports on the ethical dilemma of couples who want to "design" their baby for purely social reasons.
