| Monday, 16 October, 2000, 22:20 GMT Clashes claim Palestinian lives ![]() A Palestinian lies wounded in Ramallah Two Palestinians have died and several dozen have been injured during clashes with Israeli troops in the West Bank and Gaza. Sergeant Musbah Abu Maahtuk, was shot dead and 38 other people were wounded as Israeli troops opened fire on a Palestinian police checkpoint at Rafah on the Gaza Strip.
Palestinian security services said that the Israelis later took full control of the checkpoint. A 13-year-old Palestinian boy died after being shot in the head during clashes in the West Bank town of Bethlehem. Muayyad Osama Jawarish was one of at least 11 Palestinians wounded as they fought Israeli troops in the town. Clashes continue Violent clashes continued throughout the territory as the Israeli-Arab summit got under way in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. And Israeli army radio reported that clashes were going on into the night in several West Bank locations.
At least seven Palestinians were wounded during the day's clashes in Hebron. One of the wounded was in a critical condition after being hit by a live round. Hospital sources in Ramallah said a total of 15 people there had been wounded, two of them critically, mostly by live fire from Israeli troops. Another eight Palestinians were wounded in firing between Palestinian gunmen and Israeli soldiers on the main road to Jerusalem through Nablus. No surrender Thousands of demonstrators marched in the territories calling for the continuation of the Intifada (uprising) and urging Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat not to give in to American and Israeli pressure. Around 3,000 people in Gaza City were reported to have marched to the Palestinian parliament building where they burnt wooden coffins symbolising the Israeli-Palestinian accords, Israel and the United States. More than 100 people - most of them Palestinians - have been killed since the uprising began on 28 September. |
