Israel has awarded honorary citizenship to a former Swedish diplomat who is said to have saved the lives of thousands of Hungarian Jews during the Second World War.

The diplomat, Per Anger, was the first to issue temporary Swedish identity cards to Jews threatened with deportation to concentration camps.

The scheme was later expanded by Mr Anger's better-known colleague at the Swedish legation in Budapest, Raoul Wallenberg. Mr Wallenberg was arrested after the Red Army entered Budapest on suspicion of spying, and is believed to have died in Soviet captivity.

After the war, Mr Anger campaigned for the release of his former colleague.
