UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has used a trip to Gaza to express his "solidarity" with the people there, who he said struggle under "unacceptable, unsustainable conditions."

Speaking from Khan Younis, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, he said that the United Nations had been trying for three years to complete a housing project in the region, and that the continuing damage was "distressing" to him.

But he confirmed that the Israeli government had recently approved a UN request to continue its humanitarian projects.
