| Sunday, 19 April, 1998, 20:18 GMT 21:18 UK British visitors denied visit to Vanunu ![]() The prison authorities prevented actress Susannah York from visiting Mr Vanunu The Israeli authorities have prevented three British visitors from seeing Mordechai Vanunu, the nuclear technician jailed in 1986 for telling The Sunday Times newspaper that Israel was secretly building nuclear bombs.
The three flew to Israel in hopes of meeting Mr Vanunu and to present Israel's president with a petition calling for his release.
Mr Vanunu is serving an 18-year sentence for espionage and treason, after he was lured by a female Israeli agent from Britain to Rome, and then kidnapped and taken to Israel to stand trial. Until March 1998, he was held under solitary confinement, and will have his first parole hearing next week. |
