Pope Benedict XVI has visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem as part of his five-day visit to Israel.
As a child growing up in Nazi Germany, Pope Benedict joined the Hitler Youth, as was required of young Germans of the time, but he was not an enthusiastic member.
During what will be the most sensitive part of his tour of the Middle East, he is expected to discuss the issue of peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
Jeremy Bowen reports from Jerusalem.
