Hamas announces ceasefire in Gaza

The Palestinian militant group Hamas has announced an immediate ceasefire with Israel in Gaza.

In a statement, the group said it would hold fire for a week to give Israel time to withdraw its forces from the Gaza Strip.

Hamas' deputy chief in Syria, Moussa Abou Marzouk, made the announcement hours after Israel began a unilateral ceasefire.
