The US has reminded Syria it intends to impose sanctions over what it calls its support for terrorism and failure to stop militants entering Iraq. White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters that the US was "moving forward" on sanctions and Syria had to address American concerns.
"We'll have more to say on that very soon," the spokesman added.
His comments came after two congressmen accused President George W Bush of easing pressure on Damascus.
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Republican, and Eliot Engel, a Democrat, suggested that the Bush administration was appeasing Syria by not implementing the Syria Accountability Act, passed in November last year.
"Our goal is... to make sure that we take steps that will lead to Syria changing its behaviour," Mr McClellan said on Friday.
Chief among US concerns are that of foreign militants fighters using Syria as a point of entry for Iraq and Syria's reported pursuit of weapons of mass destruction.
