| Tuesday, 5 February, 2002, 21:54 GMT Iran challenges US on al-Qaeda fugitives ![]() Foreign minister urged US to cease war of words Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi has challenged the United States to provide evidence of fugitive al-Qaeda members crossing the border from Afghanistan into Iran. Speaking at a news conference in Tehran, Mr Kharrazi again denied American accusations that Iran had allowed the fugitives to cross into its territory.
Mr Kharrazi admitted that narcotics smugglers and migrants had continued to enter Iran from Afghanistan despite strenuous Iranian efforts over many years to stop them. Letter to Annan He urged the United States to share any information they had so that Iran could take action. Any al-Qaeda or Taleban members caught in Iran, he said, would be handed back to the authorities of their own countries.
