| Friday, 30 November, 2001, 12:13 GMT Algerian TV holds floods telethon ![]() The telethon aimed to raise money for survivors Algerian television has been broadcasting a special 30-hour live telethon to appeal for contributions for families affected by the devastating floods that overwhelmed parts of the capital Algiers earlier this month. More than 750 people died in the floods, the majority of them in a single district of the city, Bab el-Oued. The telethon, which ran for 30 hours until early on Friday, raised 570 million dinars ($7.4 million) in its first 15 hours
The appeals for donations are interspersed with harrowing pictures of neighbourhoods and people being swept away by floodwater. The programme was beamed by satellite across the Arab world and to southern France, where many North Africans live. Some of Algeria's best-known performers took part to lament the more than 700 dead. The broadcast has raised more money than a similar event last year, held to raise money for victims of an earthquake at Ain Temouchent in December 1999. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Middle East stories now: Links to more Middle East stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||
