Kuwait arrests follow Canadian's death

Ethier was shot near Kuwait City
Two men from the Philippines are being held in connection with the killing of a Canadian man earlier this month.

The man, Luc Ethier, 36, died on the spot after being hit by three bullets in a busy market area on the outskirts of Kuwait City on 10 October.

Ethier worked as a civilian aircraft engineer for the US defence contractor DynCorp in Kuwait's Ahmed al-Jaber air base.

Kuwaiti Interior Minister Sheikh Mohammed al-Khaled al-Sabah said the motive for the shooting was personal, not political.

There were fears that the shooting of Ethier and his wife was related to the US war against terrorism.

The two men - one of whom was arrested in Saudi Arabia and extradited to Kuwait - have not been named.

Knew wife

Unnamed security officials say the two men knew Ethier's wife, Mary Jane Vitos, who is also from the Philippines.

She was wounded in the attack that killed her husband.

Mrs Vitos has identified Majed al-Mutairi of Kuwait as the attacker, a charge his lawyer denies.

Mr Al-Mutairi has been detained as the main suspect in the case.

Canadian contingent

Canada has supported US strikes on Afghanistan's ruling Taleban for harbouring Saudi-born militant Osama Bin Laden, the prime suspect in the 11 September attacks on New York and Washington.

Ann Saunders, a Canadian school counsellor working in Kuwait, told Reuters: "I feel threatened at the moment. We feel that we could be isolated targets."

She added: "At the moment I don't feel there is a need to leave Kuwait, but if there is another incident we will seriously consider leaving."

There are about 4,000 Canadians in Kuwait.

Kuwait is supporting America in its war on terrorism.

The US has kept a military presence in the country since leading a Gulf War coalition that ended a seven-month Iraqi occupation.
