| Monday, 1 October, 2001, 11:52 GMT 12:52 UK Peres denies anti-Arafat army plot ![]() Israel has eased restrictions since the truce last week The Israeli Foreign Minister, Shimon Peres, has denied saying he believed a senior commander in the Israeli army wished to kill Yasser Arafat. In a statement, Mr Peres says the army follows political orders and that there is no plan nor any desire for the Palestinian leader to be killed.
During the interview, Mr Peres talked of disagreements with the deputy army chief of staff, Major General Moshe Yahalon. The author of the article then writes: "Peres is convinced that Yahalon is determined to get rid of Arafat." But there is no direct quote from Mr Peres on this. And Shimon Peres warns against any plan to kill Mr Arafat, saying that if he is killed, he may be replaced by Islamic militant groups committed to Israel's destruction, such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah. |
