| Thursday, 2 August, 2001, 13:58 GMT 14:58 UK Israeli soldiers held over beatings ![]() Palestinians say they are often mistreated by the Israeli army By James Reynolds in Jerusalem The Israeli army says it has arrested six of its own soldiers on suspicion of beating Palestinian civilians in the West Bank. The soldiers have been arrested because of events which happened outside the West Bank town of Hebron 10 days ago. The Israeli human rights group B'Tselem says that the group of soldiers stopped two Palestinian taxis carrying 12 passengers.
The rest were made to drive past an olive grove to a secluded area. The human rights group says the soldiers then beat one of the Palestinians severely, and the group says the soldiers forced the remaining men to hit each other. In all, four Palestinians were treated in hospital afterwards. Indictments expected According to the Israeli army, three of the six soldiers arrested appeared before a military court yesterday, with the other three appearing in court today. Indictments are expected to be filed next week. What happened outside Hebron received widespread media coverage. Human rights groups say it is another sign of the Israeli army's poor treatment of Palestinians. But others defend the army, saying that the Palestinian uprising, or intifada, has placed great strain on young soldiers. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Middle East stories now: Links to more Middle East stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||
